CALL AND RESPONSE: READING AND SLIDESHOW
7pm, Friday, June 22nd, 2012
Readings by Pearl Pirie, Amanda Earl, Monty Reid, Sandra Ridley, Christine McNair, Claudia Coutu Radmore and rob mclennan.
Photographs by Leslie Hossack, John Hewett Hallum, Rob Macinnis, Pedro Isztin, Caroline Tallmadge, Olivia Johnston, and Greg Zenha.
The CALL AND RESPONSE project engaged two creative communities in a year-long exchange of images and words. Artists showing work in the Red Wall Gallery have had their photographic statements poetically responded to by writers curated by rob mclennan.
This interaction can be experienced as poetry and images come together in the Red Wall Gallery for the duration of each exhibition. There will also be scheduled readings, and a poem/image card for each pairing, as well as the inclusion of selected images and poems in the next edition of Push/Pull magazine.
CALL AND RESPONSE has been a nearly year-long project of poets responding to shows at the School of Photographic Arts: Ottawa. Featuring seven Ottawa poets, each responded to a particular curated show showing at SPAO, with each response available in the gallery at the opening of their corresponding exhibits (as well as some or all of the poetic responses online).
On Friday, June 22, 2012, all seven poets will be reading from their responses, with a slide show showing the works they responded from. Lovingly hosted by rob mclennan and SPAO.
Author bios can all be accessed here.
The Red Wall Gallery is located in SPAO at 168 Dalhousie, at the corner of Bruyère, in the Byward Market. Viewing/reading hours are from Monday to Friday 10:00 -18:00, and Saturdays from 10:00-15:00.

"I began photographing farm animals because I was interested in using them as a metaphor for the fashion model, I wanted to draw parallels between literally consuming them, which we do everyday, and the way the photograph 'consumes' its subject."

He discusses the Victorian era, the history of the magic lantern, turn-of-the-century family life, poverty, recreation, and transportation, with an emphasis on social history bringing both the individual slides and the era to life.
A lifetime of collecting that began at the age of ten with a carbon filament light bulb has given the professor a broad knowledge of both vintage photographs and photographic equipment. SHOOT BACK
Vernissage Thursday, September 22nd, 2011, 18:00 - 20:00
On View September 22nd, 2011 - October 4th, 2011
Artists: Sara Baldi, Melissa Blackman, Andrew Carson, Benoit Duquette, Mitra Eghtedari, Paule Fournier, Kelly Hein, Alison James, Olivia Johnston, Jamie Kronick, Whitney Lewis-Smith, Talhia McNeil, Ben Murray, Meghan Nicholas, Martin Nombrado, Jennifer Noseworthy, Kathy Roussel, Cory Shepherdson, and Caroline Tallmadge
Visual correspondence between Ottawa School of Art (OSA) and School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa (SPAO).
The eighty photographs that make up Shoot Back were made in a collaborative project between two teachers, two schools and nineteen students. Born from the idea of sending postcards through the mail, students were asked to create a photograph for exchange. That photograph was then identified by number only and sent from SPAO to OSA where students laid out the photographs on a table and chose one photograph that they wanted to respond to. Students responded visually to by creating another photograph to send back. The response was open-ended. Whatever they deemed significant about the photo they chose set the course for future correspondence. And so it went for 3 months. Week after week, images traveled back and forth between the OSA and SPAO in a tidy accordion file.
The students did not meet or have any reference as to whom they were corresponding with until the session ended, and did not even have to follow the same thread week by week. They were purely reacting to visual cues and "shooting back". When they did finally meet, they found that however different their schools and styles were, it did not alter their common passion for photography.

For Architecture Week (October 2nd-9th, 2009) instructors, alumni and students of the SPAO Portfolio Program will present a juried selection of architectural photographs examining Ottawa's urban fabric.
Architecture has been a favourite subject of School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa (SPAO) creators since its founding in 2005. This year, SPAO has been invited to participate in the Ottawa Regional Society of Architects' (ORSA) Architecture Week, from October 2nd to October 9th, 2009.
Photography has been described as “Building with light”. The two-part exhibition presented by SPAO entitled Imaging the Urban Fabric, is a celebration of the visual kinship between architecture and photography that has existed since photography's invention.
Students, instructors and alumni of the SPAO Portfolio Program have submitted their best architectural photographs on the theme “Ottawa, the Urban Fabric” to be juried. Selected works in a variety of photo media will be on view in SPAO's Red Wall Gallery and/or displayed in the NCC Infocentre during Architecture Week.
