    Prof. M. Lindsay Lambert's Biography

Professor M. Lindsay Lambert was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, in 1956. He began collecting in 1966, with the memorable early find of an old carbon filament lightbulb. In 1972, he found an 1890's mahogany and brass camera for 4x5 inch glass plates at a garage sale, and became interested in the history of photography; he first became aware of magic lanterns through his photographica collecting. From 1974-1978 he studied theatre at the University of Victoria in British Columbia. These theatre studies led him to designing and building a working limelight spotlight, which in turn led him to joining the Magic Lantern Society and the Magic Lantern Society of the United States and Canada. He acquired two magic lanterns around this time, as they were related to his studies. He began picking up slides for the lanterns when they came to him; said slides date from about 1850 to 1910, and run the gamut from hand-painted examples to colour transfers and photographs, as well as a few slip, lever, and rackwork slides. In his magic lantern show he discusses the Victorian era, the history of the magic lantern, turn-of-the-century family life, poverty, recreation, and transportation, with an emphasis on social history. Prof. Lambert is a member of the Photographic Historical Society of Canada and is a Contributing Editor to Photographic Canadiana.
