SPAO Portfolio Program
The 2-3 year, SPAO Portfolio Program, produces skill-sets that exceed industry standards and merges the fine arts with commercial applications, while allowing students the freedom to develop their portfolios.
Its small class sizes grant students ample one-on-one attention and personalize the learning experience in SPAO's intimate nurturing atmosphere. The School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa is a unique facility that provides creative freedom and open access to its full-time students. Open 7 days a week, SPAO Portfolio Program students have extended access to the darkroom, computer lab and studio work-spaces and the research library.
Critiques and thesis-style advisory sessions encourage the pursuit of a personal aesthetic and evolve individual talent at SPAO. As the program educates through performance, it maintains an organic relationship between its component courses. Digital and analog course content merges classic and contemporary techniques seamlessly. The core curriculum addresses: photographic theory, history and achievement, studio and lighting techniques, printmaking techniques, digital techniques, portfolio, magazine and exhibition design and concepts, and personal aesthetics.
The SPAO Portfolio Program is two years long with an optional invitational directed research and production year. It is in session every year from September to May. Students are carefully selected through a rigorous admission process to become part of the only 26 member student body, where they then enjoy a 1:3.5 teacher student ratio.
