Portfolio Course Description
This course has been designed to build upon and expand students' knowledge base in all aspects of photography. Events and activities include presentations by guest lecturers, collaborative exchanges, arts competitions, group projects, and SPAO exhibitions. Students attend talks by professionals in the field, excursions to critical institutions, and cultural events. The semester concludes with a student-led production of an exhibition of their works.
The Red Wall Gallery has presented many exhibitions of photographic art featuring work by SPAO students as well as internationally known emergent and established photo-based artists. In this course, the Red Wall Gallery acts a valuable teaching tool, providing students with possibly their first opportunity to present their work publicly. Exhibition of work, an experience essential to development, will create an awareness of the dialogue that accompanies the act of public presentation. This course aids the student by allowing them to learn by participating in the many aspects of show organization: design, framing, matting, installation, art writing, and promotion. Pieces produced in this session will be featured in SPAO's Open House Exhibition.
The prerequisites for this course may be taken concurrently. They are: Photographic Theory I, Digital Post Production I, History and Theory of Photography I, The Silver and Alternative Print I, and Studio and Lighting Techniques I, or their equivalents. This is an intermediate level course and expands on fundamentals necessary for other SPAO courses and workshops. Students must have access to a laptop computer with Photoshop CS4 or later installed and be equipped with a medium format film camera. The materials fee for this course covers a limited quantity of print production materials. The materials fee also covers computer lab, darkroom and studio booking costs for participating students. Enrolment is limited to ensure one-on-one attention.
