Workshop Description
The visual impact and expressive possibilities of black and white photography are undeniable. Explore the creative potential of digitally produced black and white images with instructor Gary Jones.
Exceptional black and white images use a variety of compositional elements to create impact in the absence of colour. Leading lines, graphic shapes, isolating elements, contrast, tonal range, composition, ISO selection, metering techniques, filter selection, etc. are just a few of the considerations when making monochrome images.
This workshop will hearken back to the early days of photography, but with a modern twist. Students will explore shooting in both colour and black and white in the camera, as well as converting from colour to black and white on the computer. Composition, the use of black and white camera filters, and the Zone System will also be discussed.
A Digital SLR camera and a laptop computer with editing software (Photoshop CS, Photoshop Elements, GIMP, etc) are required. As this is an intermediate level workshop, participants are expected to have a working knowledge of their equipment and software. Recommended prerequisites are: Foundation in Digital Photography, Beyond the Basics, or their equivalent. Enrolment is limited to ensure one-on-one attention.
